The stylish Dormobile
Did you know Ford makes a camper van? Well, the company does, and it’s called Nugget. Ford vehicles have a long history of being used as the basis for camper vans that stretches all the way back to the 1950s, including this incredibly stylish Dormobile.
The U.K. produced Ford Thames 15-hundredweight van (762 kg in today’s money) was the ideal base for the Dormobile because it could double as an ordinary vehicle during the week then whisk the family away for picnics or weekend breaks.
During the same period, Ford developed a relationship with famed camper van converter Westfalia, producing a small leisure vehicle called the FK1000, later renamed the Taunus Transit.
Westfalia also collaborated on the original Nugget, which launched in 1986 and was based on the third generation Transit. It offered space for four to sleep, a two-burner cooker, sink, refrigerator and a choice of pop-up or high roof.
