Turning little journeys into big adventures

Back in May we launched our ‘Park the Car’ initiative, encouraging people to leave their cars at home for journeys that can easily be made on foot or by bike. To coincide with October being International Walk to School Month , we’re now introducing ‘Park the Car for Little Journeys’, focusing on the benefits of leaving the car behind for those trips so many of us are familiar with – taking the kids to school.

Around one third of parents drive their children to school and in a large city like London in the UK, over a quarter of a million trips every day are for the school run. In the mornings, that equates to around a quarter of weekday peak-time traffic. Making the decision to walk instead can obviously help ease congestion, but it can also be a time for adventure and family bonding.

To help inspire young minds and open their eyes up to the magic that reveals itself when you’re on foot, we’ve created a special ‘Park the Car Bingo’ game. Playable on smart devices, the game has a panel of 36 items – from insects to buildings – to keep an eye out for on your walks to and from school over the next week. Perhaps you might spot something you live near but have never noticed before as you whizz past it every day in the car? There are also downloadable daily versions that you can print out and take with you every day for a week.

And to show your support – and perhaps even encourage others to leave their cars at home for the school run – you can also download a special ‘We’re Walking to School’ hanger. Colour it in, cut it out and hang it from the rearview mirror of your family’s parked car so everybody passing knows you’ve decided to turn your little journey into a big adventure.
