Sharing driving data could help reduce your insurance costs

For many of us, bills are rising – and that includes insurance premiums.¹ However, we are helping drivers qualify for potentially cheaper, more personalised quotes.

This taps into the fact that for a significant proportion of the population, our driving habits have changed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, with hybrid working practices commonplace.

In the UK alone, working from home resulted in a 885-million kilometre decrease in the distance covered by drivers per week.² Changing behaviours also affect the time when we travel and this may affect the likelihood of being involved in an accident.

Ford drivers now stand to benefit through our collaborations with a number of companies with usage-based insurance (UBI) companies.

UBI products use your driving data as well as the usual factors such as where you live, how old you are, and what kind of car you own to arrive at a personalised premium. It can reward good driving styles – looking at your acceleration and braking for example – with lower premiums³  and also reward those who drive less, but well.

“The way that many of us use our cars has changed over the past two years. For example, hybrid working could mean spending just two days commuting rather than going into the office five days a week. By enabling drivers to choose usage-based insurance we are helping to provide a service that could make our customers lives easier now and in the future.”

With your consent, Ford’s connected vehicles are able to collect the data required without requiring a “black box” or plug-in device to be installed into the vehicle. It can all be done with a couple of clicks.

What we’re doing to help expand UBI

We have collaborated with several companies to ensure that as many insurers as possible can make UBI product offers available to Ford owners. These include OCTO Telematics, Redtail Telematics, Verisk, Caruso ⁵, High Mobility ⁶ and GDV DL. Such companies supply insurance firms with data in a form they can use to determine a driver’s risk of a claim.

Last year, we teamed up with By Miles in the UK for those customers who are now travelling fewer miles to have cheaper insurance, without analysis of their driving styles. The product, By Miles Connect, will enable you to be priced fairly based on actual miles driven. Drivers who cover under 7,000 miles per year could save an average of £303.64 by insuring their car with By Miles

The growth of data-driven insurance in the auto insurance industry will hopefully lead to greater competition and innovation. We aim to support UBI expansion by supplying accurate, real-time vehicle data that help customers find the best insurance deals.
