Automated Valet Parking takes finding a space to the next level

The search for a parking space can be challenging – and once you do find one it might be a tight squeeze. Many parking spaces are the same size as they were years ago, while vehicles themselves have grown bigger.

Automated Valet Parking enables drivers to use an app to send the vehicle into an automated parking manoeuvre from outside the vehicle without risking damage to – and from – other vehicles parking close by.

The technology, currently in the research and demonstration phase, could also be extended to enable drivers to send the vehicle to a car wash or charging station, or even have parcels delivered to the boot in the car park.

Automated Valet Parking enables drivers to leave the vehicle in a designated area and use the FordPass app to start looking for a free parking space.
* Sensor technology in the car park takes over the control of the vehicle and manages all the traffic inside the parking area.

Drivers simply use the FordPass app to request the return of the vehicle to the designated area, expediting the pick-up experience and enabling occupants to comfortably enter the vehicle. This saves any long walks through large car parks or the potential problem of trying to find the vehicle again.

Partnered in development with infrastructure providers and technology companies, including Bosch, The Automated Valet Parking solution can be deployed by installing sensors into established car parks or planned into the construction of new facilities.

This technology would be suitable for vehicles already on the road that have an automatic transmission, Electronic Stability Control, an electric park-brake and assisted steering. All that the vehicle requires in addition is a smart communication unit.

“The demonstration shows that driverless parking is a reality and that the broader benefits go beyond comfort, convenience and time-saving. Whether at the airport, urban centre or sports arena, parking could soon become far more efficient, with contactless entry, payments and exit. Having vehicles endlessly circling the car park looking for a suitable space will soon become a thing of the past.”
