Mustang is Still the Best-Selling Sports Car on the Planet

Our iconic Mustang1 is one of the best-known sports cars ever made, and now it’s the best-selling sports car in the world, too… for the second year running.

Limited-edition models like the Bullitt helped Mustang to also become the world’s best-selling car with a sleek sports coupe body style for the sixth straight year, according to the most recent vehicle registration data from IHS Markit.2

Drivers in the US continue to buy more Mustangs than in any other part of the world, but sports car fans in Europe played a big role in keeping the high-performance model at the top of the table last year. Customers in Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary and the Netherlands all bought more Mustangs in 2020 than in 2019.

Our latest limited-edition Ford Mustang – the super-sporty Mach 1 – will begin deliveries in Europe soon.

1 Ford Mustang CO2 emissions 256-284 g/km and fuel efficiency 11.2-12.4 l/100 km WLTP.

The applied standard test procedures enable comparison between different vehicle types and different manufacturers.

2 IHS Markit global vehicle registrations are compiled from government and other sources and capture 95 per cent of global new vehicle volumes in more than 80 countries. Sports cars, as defined by IHS Markit, include all vehicles in the IHS Markit Global Sports Car segment. Mustang is America’s best-selling sports car over the last 50 years, based on Ford analysis of 1966-2020 total U.S. new vehicle cumulative registrations for all sports car segments supplied by IHS Markit.
