Abel Torres, Team Fordzilla’s youngest racing driver

Seeing Abel compete in video game races is impressive, not only because of his skills and wit, but because he is only nine years old. But the way he got started is even more remarkable: at the young age of five, he took everyone by surprise when he raced in a wooden cockpit built by his father.

Team Fordzilla Spain met Abel Torres in Galicia for a fun day of go-karting and shot a video at the event so fans could get to know this rising star that everyone is talking abouta little better. “When I first took him to go-kart tracks, people asked me how long he’d been competing because of how he was taking corners. I replied that it was only our second day and that he had learned to race by playing video games,” explained Martín Torres, Abel’s father.

So how did it all begin? “I knew he was good, but I wasn’t aware of his potential,” confessed Abel’s father. Any doubts as to his driving skills were put to rest thanks to a small sim racing event where Martin worked, that Pablo López attended. “Pablo asked me if he could post on social media a few videos he had made of Abel driving in the simulator. A week after uploading them, he told me that people were blown away. Months later, I got a call from Fordzilla to discuss the possibility of having Abel join the team,” he said.

José Iglesias, the Team Fordzilla Spain captain, told us more about Abel’s incredible ability and hiscontinuous improvement. “Those of us immersed in this sport understand that his level cannot be measured in terms of quality but rather by how much he has progressed… and he is a cut above the rest. He is the boss. It is not a matter of integration; he is the one who calls the shots in the group,” he stated.

And at the ripe old age of nine, the youngest member of Team Fordzilla continues to amaze everyone with his driving skills. “When I see him take the wheel, change gears and operate the pedals, it is unlike anything I have ever witnessed before,” revealed his teammate Pablo López.

While being part of the team is teaching him self-discipline when it comes to racing,at the end of the day, Abel is still a kid and his favorite thing is to have fun on the track. “It’s boring to race alone. What I really enjoy is going head to head with others,” he explained while giggling.
