Raising the roof with our new camper van

Whether for weekend getaways or enjoying longer adventures with family, more and more of us are buying camper vans.

Choosing one often involves balancing the desire for interior space with the need for a practically-sized exterior that’s easier to drive, park and manoeuvre between stop-overs or during day trips.

A “pop-top” tilt roof option for our Transit Custom Nugget camper van offers the best of both worlds. And now it’s available for the first time on the more spacious Nugget Plus version, too.

On the road, the lowered roof reduces the vehicle’s height, so drivers can more easily access areas with height restrictions such as some car parks or ferries, and overhanging trees present less of a problem. It also makes the camper more aerodynamic for better fuel efficiency.*

Once at your destination, the raised roof creates more space, lets in more light and quickly converts into a sleeping area with double bed, windows, vents and adjustable reading lights. The solid plastic top is waterproof and insulated for use year-round, and is compatible with a roof rack to carry surfboards, kayaks and other outdoor equipment for adventurous holidays.

Just like the fixed high roof version, the new tilt roof Transit Custom Nugget Plus features a unique L-shaped interior layout with a kitchenette at the rear and spacious living and dining area in the centre, as well as a double bed in the tilt roof and another when the rear bench is folded.

There’s also a built-in toilet and wash basin with privacy screen for “off-grid” nights away from campsites and to make travelling with young children easier.

* Nugget Plus with Tilt Roof fuel efficiency from 8.3 l/100km and CO2 emissions from 216 g/km (WLTP).
The declared fuel/energy consumptions, CO2-emissions and electric range are determined according to the technical requirements and specifications of the European Regulations (EC) 715/2007 and (EU) 2017/1151 as last amended. Light Duty Vehicle type-approved using the World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) will have fuel/energy consumption and CO2-emission information for New European Drive Cycle (NEDC) and WLTP. WLTP will fully replace the NEDC latest by the end of the year 2020. The applied standard test procedures enable comparison between different vehicle types and different manufacturers. During NEDC phase-out, WLTP fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are being correlated back to NEDC. There will be some variance to the previous fuel economy and emissions as some elements of the tests have altered, so the same car might have different fuel consumption and CO2 emissions
