Henry Ford II

Much has been written about Henry Ford’s impact on the world, but once dust from the Model T’s wake had settled there was a huge motor manufacturing business to run. The man whose lap that task unexpectedly landed in was Ford’s eldest grandson, Henry Ford II, who passed away 32 years ago this weekend.

When Henry Ford’s son and Ford president Edsel died prematurely from stomach cancer on May 26, 1943, aged just 49, it was his son Henry Ford II who took charge of an ailing company. He immediately began recruiting an expert management team, including ten “Whiz Kids” from an Army Air Forces statistical team who were entrusted with keeping the company relevant.

By 1949, Henry Ford II had reinvented, revitalised and restructured the company to become one of the greatest industrial giants of its age, and a leader in product innovation. Two of the most recognisable Ford models ever, the stylish Thunderbird and the now iconic Mustang, were developed under his tenure.
