Ford’s first performance Fiesta

The original XR2, Ford’s first performance Fiesta, was launched 35 years ago this week. The XR2 was the second vehicle to roll out of Ford's Special Vehicle Engineering (SVE) plant in Dunton, Essex, hence the XR2 tag.

SVE’s first project was the 2.8i V6 Capri, and while it was never actually awarded an XR tag, it was the mythical XR1.

With a price tag of just £5,500 and unique styling, the Fiesta XR2 proved to be very popular, but it wasn't just about looks. The engine kicked out 84 bhp for 0 to 60 mph acceleration in 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 105 mph.
