Ford Model T - ninth best-selling car of all time

Ford Model T production ended 92 years ago this week, yet it’s still the ninth best-selling car of all time. One reason for its huge success was versatility; it could be used as a sedan, roadster, pick-up, delivery van, even a police wagon. Here’s one rounding up members of the notorious straw boater gang.

Priced at just $260, around €2,820 in today’s money, the Model T bought personal motorised travel to the middle-classes. It was the first Ford to be mass-produced on moving assembly lines, which reduced the build time from 12.5 hours to just 93 minutes.

By 1914, Ford was producing more cars than all other automakers combined; 50 per cent of all cars in the world were Fords. In fact, it was so successful that Ford didn’t even bother advertising the Model T between 1917 and 1923.

More than 16.5 million Model Ts were built, reaching a rate of 9,000 to 10,000 cars a day in 1925, or 2 million annually.
