Golden-winged Ford Fiesta

A golden-winged Ford Fiesta, known as Flügelauto, or winged car, has been a famous landmark in Cologne, Germany, for many years. It was created by conceptual artist H.A. Schult in 1991 as part of the performance Fetisch Auto (Fetish Car) and today it sits on top of the Museum of the City of Cologne.

Flügelauto wasn’t the only Ford Fiesta to fly over the city’s rooftops as part of Schult’s Fetish Car campaign. In total, 11 artistically distorted Ford Fiestas were placed in and around the city, including one that was painted with clouds and “flown” around Cologne Cathedral. The Wave was similarly decorated and floated down the Rhine. Another Fiesta, named Frozen Movement, was encased in ice; as the ice melted it transformed in to another display, Time Visible.

Schult chose the Fiesta for his car sculptures because he was looking for a car that “is there for everyone”.
