Carroll Shelby with his Shelby GR-1 concept car

A motorsport legend, Carroll Shelby would have celebrated his 96th birthday this week. Here’s the
great man with his Shelby GR-1 concept car. The fully functional concept car was revealed at the
2005 North American International Auto Show and was fitted with a Ford 6.4-litre all-aluminium V10 engine producing 605bhp and 679 Nm of torque. The GR-1 was capable of 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and a top speed approaching 190 mph.

The stunning vehicle never made it in to production, but now a company with a history of producing
some stunning Ford replicas could bring the GR-1 to life. Superformance wants to build 200 aluminium GR-1 replicas, as well as a run of carbon fibre models, and there’s also talk of an electric
version, although the cars aren’t expected to be available for at least two years.
